Burt Simon
Mathematician / Operations Research
Dr. Simon has nearly 40 years of experience in mathematical and statistical modeling of computer/communication networks, ecological/evolutionary dynamics, and games of chance and skill. He has consulted on projects in diverse fields, including wireless communication networks, statistics, and game analysis and design. Dr. Simon’s has a BS in Mathematics from Cornell University and a PhD in Mathematics from the University of Michigan. After receiving the PhD in 1980, he was at Bell Laboratories for six years, and has been a Professor of Mathematics at the University of Colorado Denver since 1986.
Examples of his consulting work include:
- A feasibility study for an optimization routine based on Kriging estimators for the OptQuest simulation optimization engine, made by OptTek Systems Inc.
- A complete game analysis of "Bet Your Booty", a Blackjack-like game that went through the Colorado Gaming Commission protocol successfully, and was beta-tested at the Riviera Casino in Blackhawk.
- A probabilistic modeling analysis of music sharing over the internet, helping to secure a successful lawsuit against an ISP responsible for music pirating.
Dr. Simon has a lengthy publication record, including pioneering papers in queueing theory, experimental design for simulations, and group selection in evolutionary theory. His work on group selection has been presented at Oxford, Harvard, Columbia, and elsewhere.
